Greetings Users,

On 31 Dec 12 the current AFSA Division 12 website, http://afsadivision12.org, will be retired in order to make room for the new Division 6 website.  The new domain name, which will go live within the next few weeks, will pick up where the Division 12 website left off.  We will continue to provide you with up-to-date information on what is happening in your division, when it is happening.

The new website, http://afsadivision6.org, will be more comprehensive and contain a wider array of informational topics ranging from Awards, Chapter Events and News, International Retiree Affairs, and other important information from your Chapter and Division Presidents and Staff.

Once the new site goes live we ask that you create a new user profile.  Although I have the capability of restoring your current user profiles on the new site, it will help in weeding out inactive and bot accounts.  This is important because our website resides on a privately run, completely voluntary web server, and the server administrator has the painstaking task of cleaning up these types of user accounts on a continuing basis.

We appreciate your understanding and patience during this important transition period and look forward to your continued patronage on the new website!

V/r,

Your AFSA Division 12/6 Web Team

1.  Administration-DoD to Recommend Base Closings by Next Spring.  Earlier, we reported that DoD has met stiff congressional resistance to its (DoD’s) plan for two more rounds of base realignments and closures (BRAC).  A recent article in The Republic both reports that DoD plans to go ahead with its recommendations to Congress and explains how the BRAC process works.  As you will see, DoD intends to call for an “independent” commission to make “independent” (without outside influence) evaluations of which, if any, military activities to close or realign and, at the same time DoD plans to make public its recommendations before such an “independent” commission is even empowered. 1.  HASC to Begin Marking Up its Version of the FY2013 NDAA.  Earlier we reported that the President’s FY 2013 Budget Plan (which contains several controversial provisions that would significantly increase the cost of TRICARE health care for military retirees and their families) is non-binding.  In order for many of the provisions to take effect, Congress would have to include the proposals in its final version of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) or, in the same legislation, Congress could prevent implementation of these provisions. 1.  Proposed TRICARE Fee Increases Draw Congressional Fire.  As Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and his subordinates worked the Hill to try to garner support for the President’s plan to greatly increase the cost of TRICARE for “working age military retirees,” an article in Politico quotes two members of the United States Senate as having voiced opposition to the proposed increases.  Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., a member of the Senate Armed Services and Budget committees recently said of military retirees and their families, “It’s wrong to ask them to sacrifice more when Washington has not had the political courage to look at the big picture on the budget or the courage to address the big drivers of our debt. . . Our military has done a lot.   Read more...
